Houseplant of the Month: November

Houseplants: like the perfect man... long lasting, great looking and low maintenance.
What is not to love?

Which is why the Flower Council of Holland have launched their Houseplant of the Month Campaign throughout 2015.  Each month they have chosen their favourite Houseplant and given a ton of information on the history and uses of the plant, how to choose a nice healthy one, and how to take proper good care of it.

We thought we'd do you all a favour and follow their lead, condensing the info in our own monthly feature.
In the eleventh part of our series...

November: Poinsettia

We're willing to bet there are not many of you out there who are unfamiliar with the poinsettia.

Known widely as 'that red one you get at Christmas', if you haven't given or received one of these fellas on a festive occasion, we'll eat our (Santa's) hat.

Mexican legend has it that a girl with not enough money to buy gifts to celebrate Jesus' birthday was inspired by an angel to offer up weeds at the alter instead.  Red leaves sprouted from the weeds and they became poinsettias, beginning the plant's long association with Christmas.

Now, we have to be totally honest here, we're not enormous fans of the garish poinsettias that get rolled out en mass each year.

Call us Scrooges, but we find them about as inspiring as a faux pine garland covered in baubles...

Having said that, if you look past the crimson, there are some beautifully tinted bracts (the leaves generally thought of as the flowers) about; from the deep plum to the coral, the blush pink to the apricot.

And we are totally on board with a shift towards the snowy white variety as a Christmas alternative.

Keep your poinsettia well watered in a light and warm position; just like us at Christmas - with a wine in front of the fire.
